Carly Smithson performs “Jesus Christ Superstar” from Jesus Christ Superstar by Andrew Lloyd Webber on American Idol Top 6, “Andrew Lloyd Webber Week”.

Randy: “It’s no surpise to me that the bigger voices are doing better tonight. Not your best but it was definitely good. Like the outfit.”

Paula: “It was so unexpected. I thought it might be too high but I love what you did in the chorus.”

Simon: “It got a little bit shouty in the middle but it was actually one of my favorite performances of the night.”

So am I, relax. I’m talking about bible tapping lunatics or people who need some sense of purpose or entitlement. A bunch of grouches complaining about a broadway production. Essentially everybody who protested the show was catholic, complaining that it was blasphemous(which from some points of view it was).

hey!!! i’m a catholic, and this song happens to be one of my favorites! just cuz she got voted off, even tho i didn’t want her to, she was good, doesn’t mean people can’t accept two points of views! some people actually don’t like the same singers other people do, so get over it!!!!!!!!!!

I totally agree. The ONLY reason she went home was because of what the song she was singing was discussing; I don’t think that it had anything to do with her performance because her performance was absolutely amazing.

The problem was the catholics, not the atheists. The play is saying that jesus was a man and nothing more, but the catholics can’t accept this as an opinion and an alternate view, so they voted her off. I thought the controversy would have died down in the 40 years that have passed since it opened.

aw, c’mon, the only reason she got voted off is because they’re atheists that are racist out there. =_= Sad world, it is.

I loved this performance, it was lively and entertaining. I wish she could have stayed longer. :[

Mmm, she’s a good singer but I didn’t like what she did with the song, call me blasphemous but I think the 2000 film version was the best and I’ve yet to hear a version that compares to it.

    Scratch that… Murry Head wins.

    Still, I loved this performance.

Personally, I think Ben Vereen beats both Carl and Carly.

But this isn’t a musical, it’s a vocal number. She’s not part of a story, she’s singing a song. And she does it pretty damn well — and she shouldn’t've been kicked off for this performance.

Why do we argue about the style of two different singers. If you like one or the other or both, so be it. If you don’t like what you are listening to………..Don’t listen to it. Carl – Carly A++ for Both.

I’m not familiar to the lyrics of the song, but she did a studio version of this song and it is great, go and check it out, there is a reason why Andrew L.W chose this song for her, and Carl Anderson (although he is great) is simply not in the same league as Carly’s vocal prowess and her incredible range.

I guess i was ignorant to say that she is much better than Carl in the first place. Oh well, music is subjective afterall.

Yes she did screw up the lyrics–She sang “why you let the way you did get so out of hand” and “jesus christ superstar who are you what have you sacrificed.” She has a great voice but I mean how can you beat Carl Anderson? It would be an insult to him to say she did.

Urgh great voice, but the slipups were sooo distracting.
